Volunteer Recognition

Thanks

We have the honour of recognizing Barbara Evans-Boyden who has volunteered at the South Georgian Bay Community Health Centre (SGBCHC) since February 2012. Her volunteer service has being in a variety of programs including the Building Balance Program, Fitness for Health, Walking Program and as a fill in for the Volunteer Coordinator. Barb has given many volunteer hours to the SGBCHC. We would like to take this opportunity to express our thanks, and appreciation for all the time and effort she has put into volunteering for us. It's a person like Barbara, who helps to keep our services and programs going. We have asked Barb to do a little write up about her life path including her volunteering.

July 1, 2011, I retired from an active career in the health field. It began by graduating from Women’s College Hospital, School of Nursing and continued with a career in Toronto. It included Continuing Education courses as well as working in a variety of clinical teaching and management positions. I ended my career in Clinical Research, as a Senior Research Associate with a pharmaceutical company. In 2005, we moved from Mississauga to Wasaga Beach.

Having retired, I knew that I wanted to volunteer but had to find “something” that would incorporate my experience and have me feel that I was making a difference in the ongoing health and fitness of others. For many years, I have carried out my own dietary and fitness routine.

In January 2012, I had my interview with Sue Harris, Volunteer Coordinator and was introduced to the Building Balance Program. I am now teaching the “Strengthening” part of this program which is held at the YMCAs in Wasaga Beach and Collingwood. I also volunteer for the Fitness for Health Program and Walking Program primarily over the summer months

What do I think of volunteering at the SGBCHC, Wasaga Beach? For me it is a “win-win” situation. In a few weeks of participating in the Building Balance Program, the team notices improvement in their overall strength and stamina. They smile more and verbalize self-confidence in carrying out activities of daily living.

On a personal note, I am happily using my knowledge by helping others improve their health, fitness level and sense of well-being. Volunteering has also put me in contact with new people who are sharing a common goal. As a result, they have introduced me to many new learning opportunities.

Thank you, South Georgian Bay Community Health Centre.
